Getting Started
Lumen & Line Designs is an independent residential electrical drafting and lighting design consultancy based in Melbourne, operating across metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria. We produce construction-ready electrical and lighting plans for new builds — the complete set of documents your builder, architect, and electrician need to execute your home's electrical systems precisely, compliantly, and beautifully. We do not sell light fittings. We do not take supplier commissions. We are a pure-design service: our only loyalty is to the quality of your outcome.
An electrician's job is installation. A lighting and electrical designer's job is strategy. Your electrician will expertly install whatever plan they are given — but if that plan is a rushed on-site sketch or a builder's generic template, the result will reflect that. We intervene before construction to make sure every switch placement, circuit load, lux level, and conduit route has been deliberately resolved. The plans your electrician receives from us remove all guesswork, reduce site variations, and protect your home from the compromises that typically get locked in concrete before you even know they've happened.
Interior designers and architects work at the level of aesthetics, spatial layout, and material palette. Most do not produce the technical construction documentation — the actual dimensioned plans, lux calculations, circuit load schedules, and AS/NZS 3000-compliant drawings — required by your electrician on site. We are the technical layer that translates your architect's vision and your designer's aesthetic intent into a buildable, inspectable document set. We work alongside architects and interior designers, not in competition with them.
Independence means we receive zero financial benefit from any product or supplier we specify. The lighting industry carries a widespread but rarely disclosed practice: designers or consultants receive commissions or referral fees from suppliers in exchange for specifying their products. This creates a direct conflict of interest — the recommendation you receive is shaped by who pays the consultant, not by what is technically best for your home. At Lumen & Line Designs, our fee is paid by you. Every specification is determined entirely by technical merit: the correct lux output, beam angle, colour temperature, IP rating, and value for money. No supplier has any influence over what we specify.
Yes. Our plans are produced to comply with AS/NZS 3000 (the Wiring Rules) and all relevant Australian Standards. All electrical documentation is produced by qualified personnel and is designed to be implemented by a licensed electrician — the licensed trade professional who is legally required to perform the physical installation. Our role is design and documentation; their role is installation and sign-off. This is the same model used across all commercial and institutional construction in Australia.
Our primary service area is metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria. We work remotely — all design work is performed off your architectural plans, which you provide digitally. We do not need to be on-site to produce your plans. If you are building in Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo, the Mornington Peninsula, or anywhere across Victoria, we can work with you. For projects outside Victoria, contact us to discuss.
No. We are a design-only consultancy. We do not sell, stock, or distribute any electrical or lighting products. This is deliberate and structural — it is what makes our specifications trustworthy. When we recommend a downlight, a strip light, or a sensor, that recommendation is driven entirely by what performs best in your space, at the right price point, from a reliable supplier. We will provide a full specification schedule that you or your electrician can use to procure directly.
Our 3D renders are produced using photometric calculation software — the same technology used for commercial architectural lighting. They are not stylistic visualisations. They show actual predicted light distribution: where light falls, where it doesn't, what shadows form, how beam angles interact with your ceiling height and room geometry. For clients who want to approve the visual outcome of a lighting design before construction locks it in, a render is the closest thing to seeing the finished result before a single cable is run.
